Bruce Storm

“Bruce Storm” ($40), is a softback book and is filled with full-color prints of the artists' whimsical paintings.. It is a gift to Storm from his wife, Nella Godbey Storm, and is a historical legacy of his paintings. It is available from the artist and from Muncy Historical Society and also from the society’s website, www.MuncyHistoricalSociety.org.

The book showcases many of his paintings created during a 38-year career, focusing primarily on the works of the last 20 years. “Each painting reads on three levels: the story, the humor and philosophy,” Bruce said. “Many themes deal with the unseen or unappreciated or unnoticed world around us such as romance, the environment, this and other locales that are special to my heart, my family and friends, and town folk, all are redefined as animals in my work.”

Muncy:
Postcard History Series

Muncy, Pennsylvania, a small river town founded shortly after the French and Indian War, is one of the earliest European settlements in the West Branch Valley of the Susquehanna River. Thanks to the canal, and then the railroad, historic Muncy was a business thoroughfare and lumber boomtown.

Through vintage postcards, "Muncy" depicts the varied past of this quiet town. Written by Robin Van Auken for the Muncy Historical Society, this book is on sale now and is slated for delivery on December 18, 2006, in time for the holidays. If you buy online now, the author can personalize and autograph it for you. Quantity is limited, so order yours now.

This story takes place in 1868 along the Delaware and Raritan Canal in New Jersey. On this canal, all of the bridges swung to the side to allow boats to pass. Even very tall vessels could use the canal because there were no overhead obstructions. Ten-year-old Josh Riley lives in the village of Griggstown. He is the son of the bridgetender, who pushes the bridge to the side when boats come through. Every day Josh sees boats that come from faraway places. He wishes someday he, too, could travel to big cities and see the world.

"Lycoming County's Industrial Heritage" ($24.95) by Robin Van Auken and Louis Hunsinger Jr.

Lycoming County has a rich industrial history, first in lumber and then in manufacturing. Thousands were employed as lumberjacks, and others worked in sawmills, planing mills, or furniture factories that processed the lumber. Until 1894, lumber was the county’s main industry. Inevitably, the mountainsides were denuded and floods toppled the remaining lumbering companies. The heyday over, many company towns collapsed. Boards of trade were created to entice manufacturers to the region. During the first half of the twentieth century, Lycoming once again prospered with hundreds of new entrepreneurs and companies. "Lycoming County’s Industrial Heritage" a tribute to lost labor, and is illustrated with vintage photographs from the "Grit" collection. It documents the people who worked in the factories, mills, and for the manufacturers that no longer exist, victims of recession, urban sprawl, and offshore industries. Each image honors the role of labor and serves as a reminder of the individuals who helped build industrial America.

"Only One Child"

Signed, limited edition true story of four young siblings from England during World War II and their adoption and life in the United States. The Barlow children were sent to be cared for by a family friend in Canada, however a bureaucratic mix up resulted in a stranger, Margaret Burgwin Brock, offering all four children her home in Pennsylvania for the duration of the war. It was a home that lasted forever. This tale of WWII British children evacuees is a touching rendition of the generosity of two women -- one who takes in four children and the other who gives her children to "Aunt Peggy."
