Muncy:
Postcard History Series

Muncy, Pennsylvania, a small river town founded shortly after the French and Indian War, is one of the earliest European settlements in the West Branch Valley of the Susquehanna River. Thanks to the canal, and then the railroad, historic Muncy was a business thoroughfare and lumber boomtown.

Through vintage postcards, "Muncy" depicts the varied past of this quiet town. Written by Robin Van Auken for the Muncy Historical Society, this book is on sale now and is slated for delivery on December 18, 2006, in time for the holidays. If you buy online now, the author can personalize and autograph it for you. Quantity is limited, so order yours now.

Around Montgomery:
Postcard History Series

Incorporated in 1887, Montgomery is the youngest borough in Lycoming County, yet it possesses a deeply rich and proud history. The town, once heralded as the “best small town on the Susquehanna,” was home to world-renowned author Conrad Richter. The vintage images in Around Montgomery show rare scenes of Alvira, a community well established for over a century before meeting its tragic end in the 1940s, as well as glimpses of Devitt’s Camp, a rural retreat for tuberculosis patients.

The images in this volume highlight the first 50 years of the borough and depict the people and places that made up the dynamic history of Montgomery and its neighboring communities.

Around Hughesville:
Postcard History Series

In 1816, Jeptha Hughes purchased a tract of land along Muncy Creek and named it Hughesburg. The town grew, and it was renamed Hughesville in 1852. Local artisans, such as millers, blacksmiths, coopers, and cobblers, flocked to the area and plied their trade. Schools and churches were established, the Williamsport and North Branch Railroad made daily stops in the area, and farm families raised livestock, field crops, and vegetable gardens.

The Hughesville Fair, an agricultural exhibition begun in 1870, became an annual tradition. Around Hughesville chronicles the people and places of this rural community between the 1880s and the 1930s, when Hughesville was a town that embraced innovative industrial change as it retained its old-fashioned country charm.

Sullivan County
Postcard Series

Called the “Gem of the Endless Mountains,” Sullivan County has been a crossroad and ethnic melting pot in the highlands of northern Pennsylvania for more than two centuries. There are villages, ghost towns, family farms, and hunting camps scattered along valley floors and clinging to the mountainsides. Early lumber mills were built along the Big and Little Loyalsock Creeks and tributaries in the early 1800s, and outdoor sports and modern tourism became major industries in the 20th and 21st centuries. Land speculation by companies such as Asylum Land Company led to the development of coal, lumber, and railroad industries throughout the county.

The Sullivan County Historical Society and Museum began in 1932 with a mission to preserve the history of Sullivan County and its communities. C. J. Hatch, in conjunction with the historical society, has compiled the vintage photographs in Sullivan County with the help of many county residents.

This story takes place in 1868 along the Delaware and Raritan Canal in New Jersey. On this canal, all of the bridges swung to the side to allow boats to pass. Even very tall vessels could use the canal because there were no overhead obstructions. Ten-year-old Josh Riley lives in the village of Griggstown. He is the son of the bridgetender, who pushes the bridge to the side when boats come through. Every day Josh sees boats that come from faraway places. He wishes someday he, too, could travel to big cities and see the world.
