“Where Play Becomes Reality”
Challenge quilt entries must be the result of an inspiration drawn from one or more of artist Bruce Storm’s watercolors, many of which were inspired by his own mother’s quilts. Quilt entries must include a legend, or paragraph, that describes how Storm’s artwork inspired the quilter, i.e. the use of his color palette, textures, compositions, forms, humors, or imagery – fantasy, whimsy, romance, imagination.
As you plan your 2009 Challenge Quilt, consider Storm’s use of quilt patterns in his landscapes or his use of icons - people, dragons, animals, etc. – that frequent his watercolors. For this Challenge year only, Storm’s art may be copied or traced if you plan on using one of his specific images in your quilt. Pull an element and interpret it your own way; replicate a landscape but use your own color scheme. Chose a watercolor as your beginning point, make it part of your design, and then be creative and innovative. Play with textures if it suits, and don’t limit yourself. For this Challenge, there are no creative restrictions, no limitations. There are no artistic boundaries except for those you set for yourself!
View the short video “Where Play Becomes Reality” (above) prepared by Nella Storm and Judith Youngman to assist you with this Challenge. Storm’s published book, showcasing his paintings, and four of his limited edition reproductions can also be accessed at this website address.
2009 Challenge Quilts may be pieced, appliquéd or a combination of these techniques. Embellishment of the artist's choice may be added to the basic construction. Your quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions fall within 144” minimum to 288” maximum circumference dimension. Judging will consider how well your quilt reflects the inspiration drawn from Storm’s artwork so your legend is important to this competition. Make sure your paragraph identifies the painting and how it impacted your design. The judges will also look at pattern, color, craftsmanship, imagination, and strong symbolic composition. The “Quilt Challenge” winner will receive a ribbon and a signed and numbered limited edition reproduction of Storm’s original watercolor, “Dream Quilt.” Ribbons will be presented to the second and third place winners.
All quilts must be registered by completing the quilt registration form. Check in for Challenge Quilts begins on Sunday, June 28, 2009, from 1:30 – 4:00 PM, or earlier by advance appointment. If it is not possible for you to hand deliver your entry, it may be mailed directly to the Muncy Historical Society, P.O. Box 11, 40 N. Main Street, Muncy, PA 17756. Contact the Society for complete mailing instructions. All quilts should include a cloth label with the name of the quilt, the owner’s name and address sewn to the back of the entry. A 4-4 ½” hanging sleeve must be affixed to the quilt. All entries must remain for the entire length of the show.

Muncy Announces 2009 Quilt Challenge,
Winners of Quilt ShowMUNCY—Muncy Historical Society announced the theme of the 2009 Quilt Challenge at its fourth annual quilt show, July 20, as well as the award winners of the 2008 quilt contests.
The society’s show featured more than 185 quilts and included a judging component, with ribbons awarded for Best of Show, Viewer’s Choice, Best Hand- and Best Machine-Quilting, and for the 2008 Quilt Challenge winning entry. The Best of Show, Challenge and Viewer’s Choice recipients also received a signed, limited-edition plate made by Selinda Kennedy, Muncy’s nationally recognized redware artist.
Blanche McCormick’s hand quilted and appliqué bed quilt “Tree of Life” entry received the Viewer’s Choice ribbon at the annual Muncy Historical Society Quilt Show.
The theme for the 2008 Quilt Challenge was “Americans Embrace Diversity” and the challenge quilt had to include a compass in the design. The judges selected Carol Nihart Odell’s entry “Reaching for the Stars” as this year’s winner.
Odell used Minnesota’s state colors of maroon and gold in the quilt and the state’s motto, “The North Star State” supported the quilt’s theme. When the Midwest began looking for “strong, able-bodied young men” Odell’s grandparents left their Central Pennsylvania lifestyle to pursue a better life in logging and farming in Minnesota. Minnesota became Odell’s home until she met her husband, Fred Odell, and together they returned to Pennsylvania where they “reached for the stars” and reared their own family.
George Shaffer of Northumberland received high honors for his quilt, “Black Beauty,” as the judges’ choice for Best of Show, Best Hand-Quilting and Best Appliqué. Shaffer’s all original album style designs were hand appliquéd using the freezer paper method on the black background. Shaffer then hand quilted the stunning 85” x 92” bed quilt with green thread.
Shaffer’s whole cloth Eagle design and Allenwood resident Blanche McCormick’s “Tree of Life” took second and third place Hand-Quilting honors.
Hughesville resident Nancy Ryder and her “Trip Around the World” and “Let Freedom Ring” quilts took first and third place Machine-Quilting ribbons while Cogan Station resident Sue Peterson’s “Remember Thee” took second place.
Fourteen quilters worked on “Jody’s Cabin in the Pines,” which was created in memory of Jody Whipple Smith. The quilt, the first place appliqué winner, was designed by Jody’s mother, Bonita Whipple of Montoursville, and will hang in the oncology unit at Geisinger Medical Center.
Joyce Enigk of Montoursville took first place honors in the Best Embroidered category for her “I Love Baskets,” second place went to Fannie McKee’s “Flower Garden” and Pennsdale’s Sue Keller took third with her “Mama Said” wall hanging.
In the wall hanging category, Sherry Walter of Mifflinburg took first place with “Hands to Work,” Barbara Brumbaugh took second with her kaleidoscope contemporary hanging and Mary Doyle, Muncy, received a third place ribbon for her “Checkerville” wall hanging inspired by a Bruce Storm watercolor of the same name.
Show attendees cast their votes on Friday and Saturday and a hand quilted and appliqué bed quilt was the Viewer’s Choice selection. Blanche McCormick’s “Tree of life” entry received a ribbon and certificate, a Kennedy original redware plate and a certified quilt appraisal.
