For questions on the Quilt Show, please call us at Muncy Historical Society at 570.546.5917, write us at Muncy Historical Society, P.O. Box 11, Muncy, PA 17756, e-mail us at MuncyHistorical@aol.com.

Registration: Pre-register your quilt(s) by completing a quilt registration form. Check-in for all pre-registered quilts, including Challenge quilts, will be Sunday, July 13, 2008, or earlier, from 1:30 – 4:00 PM. If you cannot hand deliver your entry, it may be mailed directly to the Muncy Historical Society, P.O. Box 11, Muncy, PA 17756. Contact the Society for more complete mailing instructions. Antique and new quilts will be displayed randomly while Challenge quilts will be displayed together during the 2008 MHS Quilt Show. All new and Challenge quilt entries must include a cloth label with the name of the quilt, the owner’s name and address sewn to the back of the entry. A 4-4 ½” hanging sleeve must be affixed to each quilt.

Judging: The quilts will be judged by category and, except for Viewer’s Choice, will be completed before the show opens. Judges reserve the right to change a quilt’s category when another category seems more appropriate. Judges will examine all entries and base their opinions on the following criteria:
1/3 content and design
1/3 message to the viewer
1/3 workmanship
(In other words, Workmanship is not 100 percent of the judging criteria)

Best of Show: After all categories are judged, the “Best of Show” will be selected from all first prizewinners. In the final phase of judging, all quilts winning second or third place ribbons will be considered for the “Best Hand Workmanship” and “Best Machine Workmanship” ribbons.

Viewer’s Choice: Ballots and a list of judging criteria will be available at the information table during the show. All exhibited quilts, judged and “for exhibit only” are eligible for this award. Voting for this award will be open until the show closes on Saturday afternoon, July 19. The “Viewer’s Choice” ribbon will be displayed on the winning quilt during the show on Sunday, July 20.

Prizes: Winners of “Best of the Show,” “Viewers Choice” and “2008 Quilt Challenge” will receive a ribbon and a limited edition redware plate designed by nationally recognized artist Selinda Kennedy. Ribbons will be presented to the first, second and third place winners, as well as honorable mention. (All quilt entries will receive a 2008 Muncy Historical Society Quilt Show entry label.)

The 2008 Quilt Show Challenge

Theme: The theme for the 2008 Quilt Challenge is “Americans Embrace Diversity.” Evidence is found in our past, our present and our future. It is found in everyday life as well as global endeavors. The “Muncy Compass,” an 1855 album (or friendship) quilt in the museum’s collection, serves as the foundation for the new challenge. Each entry must represent the quilter’s interpretation of the challenge statement and must include the image of a compass somewhere in the quilt design. Your entry should represent your interpretation of the challenge statement. All Challenge quilts must be pre-registered on the same form used for quilts in all categories and will be displayed together at the 2008 Show.

Techniques: 2008 Challenge quilts are subject to the same entry guidelines as all other categories in the quilt show. Each entry may be pieced, appliquéd or a combination of these techniques. Embellishment of the artist's choice may be added to the basic construction.

Size: Maximum 72" x 72"; Minimum 36" x 36". The quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions fall within these guidelines.

Pick-up: Sunday, July 20, 2008, at 4 p.m. or Monday, July 21, 2008, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. unless other arrangements are made. All entries must remain for the entire length of the show.

Questions & Concerns: We know you will understand that we will take all reasonable care of your quilt, but cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage. For questions on the Show and/or Challenge, please call us at Muncy Historical Society at 570.546.5917, write us at Muncy Historical Society, P.O. Sherry Walter's winning entry

Muncy Announces 2007 Quilt Challenge Winner

Muncy Historical Society announced the theme of the 2008 Quilt Challenge at its third annual quilt show, July 22, and awarded several participants in the 2007 contest.

The society’s show featured more than 160 quilts and included a judging component, with ribbons awarded for Best of Show, Viewer’s Choice, Best Hand- and Best Machine-Quilting, and for the 2007 Quilt Challenge winning entry. The Best of Show, Challenge and Viewer’s Choice recipients also received a signed, limited edition plate made by Selinda Kennedy, Muncy’s nationally recognized redware artist.
The theme for the 2007 Quilt Challenge was “Americana/Glory Be” and the challenge quilt had to include an eagle in the design. The judges selected “Sherry” Sheridan G. Walter’s entry “For All People” as this year’s first place winner.

The quilt gently reminds all that the blessings named in the Preamble are fundamental human rights, not the exclusive property of Americans. Quilted olive branches invite the viewer to consider images of Americana from a global perspective. In this inclusive context, the eagle is symbolic of historical American expressions of universal rights. Patriotic images, pieced into stars in a wide border with subtle value contrasts, appear to be a single fabric. This intentionally chosen effect avoids a flashy, flag-waving jingoism. Yet, close inspection will reveal that the glory of Americana is present. The patriotism is quiet, respectful and not boastful.

Towanda resident Louise Schelter’s “Domestic Tranquility” and Cogan Station resident Sue Peterson’s “Not a Turkey Mr. Franklin” placed second and third, respectively, in the Muncy Eagle Challenge contest.

Walters also received high honors for her quilt, “Ways to Center,” as the judges’ choice for Best of Show and Best Hand-Quilting. According to Walters, her inspiration came from a circa 1820s quilt made in Maryland. It is typical of the classic English-styled framed-center-square design that features a central square surrounded by 8-10 rotations. This design remained popular in northern England, but it lost favor in America early in the 1800s as American patchwork evolved toward tops constructed of individual blocks. Some of its printed fabrics provided the guidelines for the hand-quilting; other quilted designs echo or complement individual shapes.

Northumberland’s George Shaffer’s “New York Beauty No. 2” and Muncy resident Carol Odell’s “Cups and Saucers” took second and third place Hand-Quilting honors.

First and second place Machine-Quilting ribbons went to Nola Baysore, Muncy, for her “Angel of Peace” and “Pinwheels” entries and Laura Lee Ruckle, of Millmont, took third place with her “Bows and Bouquet” wall hanging.

Show attendees cast their votes on Friday and Saturday and an appliqué bed quilt was the Viewer’s Choice selection. Bill Thomas, of Montgomery, accepted the ribbon and redware plate on behalf of his wife, Betty Thomas, who had been an avid quilter during her lifetime.
