This project was supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA). State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Northern Tier Cultural Alliance.

July 18, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
(201) All Day, Sit ‘n Sew “Ohio Star” Workshop, Intermediate Level
Donna Ruppert

This workshop offers participants hands-on skill building techniques and learning that can be applied to quiltmaking. Each student will go home with specific ideas and techniques that will benefit them no matter what style quilts they make.

1) The class is about antique quilts
2) You may commit to an entire quilt or just make blocks
3) It is a technique-driven, skill-building class

OPTION 1

The Ohio Star is a very popular quilt block from our quilting history. It has been the inspiration for a number of Donna’s reproduction quilts. Taking her lead from antique quilts, this class truly offers a “make it your way” approach. Make either of the two class models offered:

OPTION 1: A 2 5/8-inch Ohio Star that alternates with appliqué floral blocks for those who like to work on a smaller scale (34" finished quilt), or a 6-inch size Ohio Star without appliqué for those who want to complete a larger project (54" finished quilt).

OPTION 2

OPTION 2: For those interested in exploring the piecing techniques without committing to a quilt project, just bring a stack of fat quarters or your scrap basket to class, pick any size star from miniature (1 1/2") to six-inches finished and have fun exploring color, pattern, and value while you work through the piecing techniques.

The morning session will focus on the technical aspects of constructing the blocks. In a fun and supportive environment, we will learn to:

  1. Understand the individual steps that can contribute to or detract from accurate piecework
  2. Analyze your work in progress to identify what’s working and what’s not
  3. Develop the skills and techniques necessary for creating beautiful, accurate blocks.

The afternoon session will examine a variety of setting options and techniques. Donna will share her “in-progress” and completed quilts that will hopefully inspire you to create your own original reproduction. There will be a brief appliqué demonstration for those who are interested. Lots of hands on help as well as cutting, piecing and pressing demonstrations will be offered throughout the day. By the end of class, all students will have at least one (and hopefully many) blocks that are perfectly precise!

Cost: $20/student. Class size limited;
check payable to Muncy Historical Society and in advance.

Donna and her husband, Brian, live in Monrovia, Maryland. The couple started “Piecing the Past” to share their love of reproduction fabrics and antique quilts with others. They both have a passion for antique quilts and textiles and American and Women’s History of the 18th and 19th centuries. Donna is an active member of an Antique Quilt Study Group. The goal of the group is to study antique quilts and textiles to further the knowledge and understanding of all aspects of historical quilt making.

July 18, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
(202) Lecture: “Where Play Becomes Reality”
Nella Storm

Nella Storm’s presentation will take us on a journey of imagination and her theme will be the “story, humor, and philosophy” behind her husband’s watercolors. Bruce Storm’s paintings are fantastical and otherworldly; many deal with the unseen or unappreciated or unnoticed world around us; and most deal with the world of possibilities not yet in play – a better world waiting to be shared. Nella will discuss the use of Bruce’s uniquely inspired sense of color and love for bold patterns, often combined with his Pennsylvania Dutch heritage recalled from images of his mother’s quiltmaking. Eventually these meshed and became the complex skies that so often mesmerize the viewer’s of Bruce’s work. The 2009 Challenge is based on Bruce Storm’s watercolor, “Dream Quilt.” To view other examples of Bruce Storm’s art, including “Dream Quilt,” follow this link >>>

This lecture is offered free.
Space is limited, advance reservations required.

Nella Storm is a Muncy artist and educator working in a variety of mediums in the tradition of Renaissance artists. Her art includes ceramic bas relief masks and sculptures, mosaics, oil and acrylic paintings, jewelry, pottery, and batiks. Recently, Nella has specialized in color consultation working on more than 500 buildings, including Tiffany’s in New York City, and numerous church restorations. She has more than three decades of professional service and has been recognized as the Pennsylvania Art Educators Outstanding Teacher of the Year. She has exhibited her works in numerous galleries, museums, and juried exhibitions and won awards at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Her artwork is in permanent collections in the Vatican Museum, Rome, the Frost Museum on the Penn State University campus, and the Lock Haven University.

Sunday, July 20, 1 - 2:30 p.m.
(401) Lecture: PA Quilt History & Bringing Antique Fabric to Market
Joan Hamme

Joan will integrate her expertise and knowledge of antique quilts and fabrics into her presentation on the history of Pennsylvania quiltmaking. In her lecture, she will address diversity factors that influenced vintage quilt makers, such as culture, ethnicity, locale, pattern and fabric. As a guest curator for two antique quilt exhibits for the York County Heritage Trust, she is intimately familiar with the Trust’s 100 splendid antique quilts in its collection and Joan will show samples of representative quilts made from reproduction fabrics. Joan also will discuss the design process of bringing that beautiful antique fabric, based on fabrics dated from 1810-1830, out of the museum and into the quilt shop.

This lecture is offered free.
Space is limited; advance reservations required.

Joan is chairman of the York County Documentation Project, which began its quilt search in 1998 and still maintains an annual Discovery Day. She is co-author of the book, “Quilts: The Fabric of Friendship.” She served as the liaison between York County Heritage Trust and McCall’s Vintage Quilts for its Spring 2005 issue featuring quilts from that collection. Joan is a member of the York County Heritage Trust, and also on their Exhibits and Collections Committee. Her affiliations include York Quilters Guild, American Quilt Study Group, Mid-Appalachian Quilters, American Quilters Society, and the Phelps New York Historical Society. She also belongs to local quilt study groups, Fran’s Vintage Friend’s and The Sisters and with each of these groups; she has participated in curating antique quilt exhibits for Quilt Odyssey in PA.
