LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS
(2009 Quilt Workshops are still being added -- please check back often)

Muncy Historical Society is pleased to offer the following lectures and workshops during its 5th Annual Quilt Show:

Quilt Appraisals
Thursday, July 16, 1 to 4 p.m and on Saturday, July 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pauline Fisher will conduct pre-scheduled appraisals on old or new quilt(s) or top(s), blocks, or quilted wearable art. It takes approximately 45 minutes to complete each appraisal, which includes time for consultation, a confidential written appraisal and a photo of the quilt. Fees: Per Item/Written Appraisal $35.

Fisher is certified by the American Quilters Society. She is a member of Professional Association of Appraisers of Quilted Textiles, American Quilt Study Group, Museum of American Quilters Society, and New England Quilt Museum. In addition to appraising quilts, she teaches quiltmaking and promotes the appreciation of women’s work in quilts. She and her husband live in North East, Pennsylvania, which is located on Lake Erie.

SMALL WONDERS with Donna Rupert
Friday, July 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $20

In the 19th Century it was common for children as young as 4 or 5 years old to be taught to sew. Some of those earliest efforts produced the most charming doll quilts.  Working on a small scale is a great idea for today's busy quilter as well. These small (not miniature) quilts allow us to explore fabric combinations, design ideas and construction techniques without making a huge investment in time and materials. When finished they can be framed, used as wall hangings, table toppers or doll quilts.

This class will introduce essential concepts and techniques to help you successfully work on a smaller scale. Many of my quilts are made from reproduction fabrics and a portion of the class will explore creating reproduction quilts from the 19th Century. You may choose from several different simple blocks and settings to get you started or you may create something uniquely your own. There will be over a dozen class samples to inspire you. Many of the class models are made from 4-patch and/or 9-patch variations and other easily pieced block units. There are also several more challenging blocks and quilts for the more experienced quilter.  Either way, you will be well on your way to a finished quilt by the end of the class.  Quilters desiring a larger project will easily be able to adapt these ideas to create a larger quilt.

SUPPLY LIST – Small Wonders, Donna Ruppert

Supplies

Sewing machine in good working order with 1/4" Foot and Size 70 Universal Needle.  Feet with a lip are not recommended for this class.  Only straight stitch is needed.  Featherweights are fine.

Neutral thread, Size 50 or 60 weight, Presencia or DMC Embroidery thread are good choices

Basic sewing kit including small scissors, seam ripper, pins

Rotary cutting supplies including: mat, cutter, a rectangular ruler 6"x12" or larger, at least on square ruler 6 1/2" or smaller

Iron and ironing board (consider sharing with your neighbor)

Basic sewing kit, including seam ripper and fine, sharp pins such as Silk pins

Extra-fine tip Sharpie and/or pencil (for marking on fabric)

Optional Supplies The Angler 2 (Please bring if you already have--but not necessary to buy in advance.  I will have them on-hand for you to try and buy if you’d like.)

Fabric Requirements

The class models are reproductions of antique doll and antique full-size quilts and have been created using reproduction fabrics. However, these small quilts would be fabulous made from contemporary fabrics. The choice is yours.

Small quilts are easy to shop for because one fat quarter will be enough for almost any portion of the quilt (sashing strips, settings, a border or a binding). You may need slightly more if working with a directional fabric such as a stripe (1/2 yard is usually enough).  Think bold when working on a small scale and make sure you have good contrast between your fabrics.

Blocks                    1/2 yard total--bring minimum 8-12 lights and darks

(fat 1/8s, fat 1/4s, charms squares and scraps work well)

Sashing                  fat quarter (or bring several f.q.s so you have a choice)

Setting                    fat quarter or half-yard if directional

Inner Border         fat quarter or half-yard if directional

Outer Border         fat quarter or half-yard if directional)

*Minimal pattern/kit fee, will be less than $5

Donna and her husband, Brian, live in Monrovia, Maryland. The couple started “Piecing the Past” to share their love of reproduction fabrics and antique quilts with others. They both have a passion for antique quilts and textiles and American and Women’s History of the 18th and 19th centuries. Donna is an active member of an Antique Quilt Study Group. The goal of the group is to study antique quilts and textiles to further the knowledge and understanding of all aspects of historical quilt making.

The Quilt Show is supported by funds from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts enabling Muncy to offer show lectures and workshops either free or at a reduced cost. This project is supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA). State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Northern Tier Cultural Alliance.

The 2008 All Day, Sit ‘n Sew “Ohio Star” Workshop taught by Donna Ruppert was most successful and participants leaned hands-on skill building techniques can be applied to quiltmaking. Each student went home with specific ideas and techniques that will benefit them no matter what style quilts they make.

The Ohio Star is a very popular quilt block from our quilting history. It has been the inspiration for a number of Donna Rupert’s reproduction quilts. Taking her lead from antique quilts, this class truly offers a “make it your way” approach.
