Annual Event an Enjoyable Challenge, Meaningful Charity
MILTON – The Wynding Brook Golf Club was an ideal setting for this year’s Muncy Cup golf event. The annual tournament is one of Muncy Historical Society’s annual events, and helps the organization achieve community-minded objectives, such as preserving local history and heritage for future generations and developing the Heritage Park and Nature Trail.
Earning first-place honors went to the two-person team of Curtis Reese and Mike Vergari. Second-place winners were Rich and Wayne Bailey, and third place went to Dick Day and Randy Wolfe. Tom Penfield and Jim Vanderlin placed fourth; Dondi Hockenbrock and Steve Sees took fifth; and Dale Appleman and Dave Boudeman’s score gave them sixth place. The first- through sixth-place teams received cash awards $400 to $40 per team
Jack Fisher, Steve Sees and Jim Hagerman won the closest to pin contests on holes 2, 6 and 13 respectively; Ernie Naugle was the winner of closest to the line contest, and Eric Yoder won men’s longest drive. Sandi Ricotta was this year’s ladies closest to the line contest champion. After a putt-off with Dave Boudeman, Rich Bailey was the putting contest winner. After lunch, the eligible contest winners attempted to hole a 60-foot putt in the standalone putting contest. There were no winners of the $5,000 putting and $10,000 hole-in-one contests.
Proceeds from the event benefit the historical society in its quest to develop a Heritage Park and Nature Trail, a multi-year plan that is transforming an 11-acre section of Port Penn into a walking trail and hands-on history lesson.
Located along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, the park is in an historical and environmentally significant region. The park highlights Port Penn, a present-day commercial center and residential area that grew out of, and around, the bustling West Branch Canal industry of the 1800s.
This year’s efforts include the installation of additional interpretive signage and the construction of River Access to the Susquehanna. The access will allow park visitors to safely reach the park’s river edge and will provide canoe and kayak paddlers on the West Branch with a convenient and safe entry to Muncy Heritage Park.
